TGIF Mini-Grant: $1,200

Project Theme: Habitat Restoration

Project Description:  On the Clark Kerr campus, there is currently an unused garden space. Transforming this space into a local garden would educate residents about growing organic and sustainable food and give them the opportunity to participate in the process of sustainably cultivating a vegetable garden. The garden would also reduce water use and repurpose the currently unused land. It would also provide residents with an abundance of tasty, local, sustainably-grown vegetables.

Goals

  1. Transform the unused garden area into a sustainable community garden that the residents of Clark Kerr can use, both as a recreational space and as an organized garden to grow their own vegetables.

  • Constructed garden bed
  • Reached out to community members
  • Taught at the Clark Kerr Preschool
  • Allied and received support from resident faculty, residents, students, and gardeners

Timeline Progress and Next Steps:

  • Reach out to community members (including GETH and Clark Kerr members)
  • Complete construction
  • Begin first planting season
  • Create and deploy educational materials

Mission Statement

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) provides funding for projects that reduce UC Berkeley's negative impact on the environment and make UC Berkeley more sustainable. TGIF will allocate funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid (via return to aid), and internships. TGIF is supported by student fees and administered through a student-majority committee and a program coordinator.
