Project Description: The I Heart Tap Water Campaign promotes the drinking of tap water by building awareness with a public information campaign, supporting and increasing the accessibility to tap water on campus, and distributing reusable water bottles.

I Heart Tap Water Website

Goals: Build on a successful on-going program to reduce the purchase and disposal of plastic drinking water bottles by establishing a campus community social norm for drinking tap water. Increase daily utilization of tap water on campus, through promotion of campus locations with quality tap water via educational outreach and the development and marketing of a campus tap water mobile device locator and map. Encourage individual commitment to drinking tap water through the campaign website, online Tap Water pledge and raffle drawings for IHTW bottles. Identify opportunities for institutional changes, such as encouraging campus events to use pitchers of tap water rather than serving bottled water and working with campus departments to eliminate water coolers. Measure and record annual campus sales of bottled water and reduce sales of bottled water and other bottles beverages by 25%, a total of 132,000 bottles. Support and promote campus installations of bottle refill stations.

  • The I Heart Tap Water team tabled at campus events including Play Green, Mind-Body Awareness Week, Earth Week, I Run 4 Cal, and UNICEF World Water Day.
  • IHTW co-sponsored with STeam a screening of the documentary "Tapped".
  • IHTW developed and promoted the I Heart Tap Water website which includes information on the benefits of tap water, prizes, and a pledge to drink more tap water.
  • IHTW created the "I Heart Tap Water at Cal" Google Map, a map of refill stations and favorite drinking fountains (as determined by data from the IHTW pledge). The site had over 4,200 hits by the end of April 2011.
  • Campus units purchased approximately 1,000 IHTW reusable stainless steel bottles for distribution to their staff.
  • As of 2006, has decreased campus retail sales of bottled water by 48%.

Mission Statement

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) provides funding for projects that reduce UC Berkeley's negative impact on the environment and make UC Berkeley more sustainable. TGIF will allocate funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid (via return to aid), and internships. TGIF is supported by student fees and administered through a student-majority committee and a program coordinator.
