Project Description:
One vital goal at the UC Botanical Garden, is to be a visible leader in global conservation. The Garden is one of the few public facing institutions within the UC Berkeley Campus Community, and with over 80,000 visitors annually, it is vital that Garden patrons demonstrate best environmental practices. The leaking, algae-covered drinking water fountain greeting guests at the front entrance needs an urgent upgrade. TGIF grant funding will be used to purchase an Elkay Water refill station to help mitigate the use of wasteful single use water bottles while educating the public about the importance of waste mitigation. TGIF grants have successfully secured water refill stations in other areas on campus, but the UC Botanical Garden might be the most visible place for this imperative modification.
Goals:
- Install an Elkay Water refill station to replace existing ancient and decrepit water fountain;
- Track the impact on plastic bottle waste reduction within the Garden and report out to Garden guests, UC Berkeley, members of the Bay Area public and TGIF.
