BYOM Intern: Morgan Fabian

Sponsor: Environment, Health & Safety

TGIF Grant: $10,000

Project Theme: Waste Reduction & Diversion

2011 Application Submission

Project Description: This project hopes to reduce the purchase and disposal of single-use coffee cups on campus through a campaign entitled “Bring Your Own Mug”, brought to you by the Campus Environmental Management System Oversight Committee. This project will develop a campus wide monetary incentive program for bringing your own mug, will educate and reach the campus community through events and social media, and have sales and give-aways of tested, purchased BYOM mugs.

Goals: Put between 400-700 BYOM logoed mugs into the hands of campus community members through subsidized sales and free give-aways. Educate the campus about the environmental benefits (i.e. diversion of waste, reduction natural resource use) of BYOM. In 2009, campus sent 5,675 short tons of municipal waste to landfill. This project hopes to reduce this amount as well as assist the campus in achieving its goal of zero waste by 2020. Create a culture of BYOM and monetary incentive program that is used by all campus dining facilities and cafés. Track the decreasing purchase of single-use coffee cups by dining facilities and cafés.

2014 Update: This project has been rolled into Refills Not Landfills
