Zero Waste Coalition Vice Chair

TGIF Award: $10,506.28

Project Theme: Zero Waste, Environmental Education

Project Sponsor: Office of Sustainability

Project Description: UC Berkeley’s Zero Waste Coalition (ZWC) is comprised of over a dozen organizations, both departmental and student-led, focused on waste-related work on campus. Since its founding in 2019, ZWC efforts led by the Chair and Vice Chair have included a broad range of programs such as: supporting the implementation of the Single Use Plastic Elimination Policy by 2030, beginning of class presentations on composting and environmental justice, hosting and facilitating a Zero Waste Lab of 40+ student researchers per semester, and leading campus Move Out and Cooperative Reuse, to name a few.  Starting in May 2021, the Vice Chair of the ZWC will be paid through the Office of Sustainability, better supporting these programs and broadening their impact on the campus community. Funding the Vice Chair position will allow for expanded zero waste programming, increased communication with member organizations of the ZWC, and better supported environmental justice initiatives.

Project Goals:

  1. Effectively expand and progress the work of the Zero Waste Coalition with an additional paid leadership position.

  2. Create a position that can support communication with/among member organizations of the Zero Waste Coalition, especially between students and administration, including the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability.

  3. Expand education and direct action at UC Berkeley related to the intersectionality of zero waste with environmental justice and accessibility.
