Compost Project for Native & Indigenous Garden
Project Leads: Sam Cruz, Andrea Salazar
Sponsor: Native American Student Development
Project Theme: Waste Reduction; Food Justice & Sustainability; Education, Outreach, & Behavior Change
Project Description:
Funding will be used to create a compost hub at the Indigenous Community Learning (ICL) Garden, which grows culturally-relevant crops and medicinal plants. Diverted food scraps and waste produced by the Native Community Center (NCC) will sustain the compost production.
Compost will support soil health at the ICL Garden. The compost hub will also support educational workshops. Students who are interested in learning more about composting processes will be able to do so through volunteering.
Goals of Project:
- Divert green waste and food scraps from the Native Community Center (NCC) to a compost hub at the Indigenous Community Learning Garden (ICL Garden).
- Create a sustainable source of organic compost for crops and medicinal plants grown at the ICL Garden.
- Engage students and members of the campus community interested in starting their own composting projects.
