Project Leads: Teresa Yu, Sharon Daraphonhdeth, Dave Sorrell, Justin Hogenauer
Sponsor: Student Environmental Resource Center
Project Theme: Education, Outreach, and Behavior Change
Project Description: Our goal is to increase and center student participation in the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS) Working Group on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Sustainability (WGDEIS). Our working group’s goals are to identify and recommend policies, practices and strategies that elevate and integrate an intersectional approach towards diversity, equity, and inclusivity in campus sustainability initiatives. The group seeks to strengthen the diversity, equity, and inclusion of the UC Berkeley undergraduate, graduate and professional student, faculty, and staff populations contributing to sustainable practices. We hope to develop recommendations, cultivate a sense of belonging in sustainability spaces, and situate environmental and social justice as central pillars of campus sustainability efforts, including in operations/administration, co-curricular learning activities, and physical planning. Student facilitators can assist with thought leadership and engagement with the student community (both undergrad and graduate students) and find sources and outreach to the community at large.
Goals of Project: Our project will tackle many areas of UC Berkeley sustainability – particularly planning, such as the Campus Sustainability Plan and feedback to the Long Range Development Plan, strengthening sustainability cohesion across campus departments and student organizations, and making recommendations that hold the university accountable for creating an inclusive sustainability environment on campus. By combining our efforts, communication, and become a driving force and resource to the UC Berkeley community, we can be able to address the intersectionality between sustainability, access, and communication, along with Diversity and Environmental Justice lenses.
