Developing a Greener Ceramic Art Facility: Energy, Material, Curriculum

Project Description

The UC Berkeley Art Practice Department will implement a two-part focus in creating a greener and more sustainable Ceramics facility: by seeking matching funds to upgrade its aging facilities by purchasing an energy-efficient kiln, re-oriented staffing time as a result of the kiln upgrade and funds to support green/recycling materials and curriculum within all ceramics classes. Pedal Power Bike Share

Project Description

Nature Village has been organizing monthly Sunday bike rides for residents for the past two years. The trips introduce residents to fun and safe bike rides in the Albany area, which are accessible for children, and help educate residents about basic safety measures for East Bay cycling. Nature Village has also partnered with BicyCAL at these events to teach residents about bicycle maintenance. Climate Vulnerability Assessment

Project Description

The Climate Readiness Institute and the Office of Sustainability and Energy propose to partner to craft a detailed assessment of the campus’ vulnerability to future climate change impacts. The project will proceed in two phases. In the first phase – Initiating Assessment and Developing Vulnerability Report – the team will set up an advisory committee and engage a graduate student to craft a Vulnerability Report. Project Description

In the hopes of furthering UC Berkeley towards its goal of Zero Waste by 2020, the Bulk Bin project, a collaboration between Cal Dining, Building Sustainability at Cal and the Zero Waste Research Center, will introduce bulk food dispensers in 4 on-campus retail locations.

Bicycle Parking Improvement Project

Project Description

The 2015 Bicycle Parking Improvement Project will add approximately 120 additional bicycle parking spaces in those areas of the central campus most in need of new bike racks. Work in some areas includes repair of damaged racks or removal of outdated/unusable racks. The project also includes an outreach component, aimed primarily at proper bike locking.

Berkeley Art Studio Clay Recycling Project

Project Description

The Berkeley Art Studio has run a robust and well-respected ceramics program throughout its history. We have over 1,300 students participate in our ceramics program annually. These 1,300 students purchase, create artwork with, and often discard massive amounts of clay each class session. The Berkeley Art Studio has always recycled discarded clay, reducing our carbon footprint and plastic materials. Strawberry Creek Water Quality Probe

Project Description

This grant will be supplemented by funding from EH&S and allow the Strawberry Creek Restoration Team to purchase a water quality probe that will assist with sediment and erosion research along Strawberry Creek.

Recycling on Campus Tennis Courts

Project Description

Blake Garden ADA Path with Native Plant Garden and Viewshed

Project Description

Blake Garden is currently building an ADA accessible path connecting the event lawn to a new handicap-accessible bathroom in the education center in hopes to expand equal opportunities for environmental education and direct experiences with nature. UC Berkeley landscape design students will use the TGIF funding to purchase native plants to plant a native and drought tolerant habitat around the path.

Strawberry Creek Planting Resilience Project

Project Description

The goal of this project is to reduce the mortality rate of Strawberry Creek restoration plantings and increase awareness of creek restoration activities through the use of a plant protection system called Combi-guards. This system uses a biodegradable mat in conjunction with a recyclable plastic sleeve to help seedlings overcome many of the disturbances and barriers to survival that urban plants face including herbivory, wind, trampling, and desiccation.
