Free Little Library

Project Description

The Free Little Library which will be installed at Clark Kerr Campus where adults and children alike come to walk their dogs or sit and enjoy the sun, hopes to bridge the gap left behind by the closing of public libraries.

Multi-Family Housing Sustainability Retrofit Documentation

Project Description

Grant funding will be used to hire a student to produce supplementary video and still photography documentation of the City of Berkeley Climate Coalition Multi-Family Working Group's (MFWG) pilot multi-family housing energy retrofit program. The video and photo documentation of the process will be edited and compiled into an efficient but thorough step-by-step instructional tool for multi-family home retrofits- many UC Berkeley students live in multi-family homes in the city of Berkeley.

SURG Redwood Restoration

Project Description

The overall goals of the project are to research Bay Area redwoods using Geospatial information systems and Traditional Ecological Knowledge. This research will focus on analyzing redwood environmental growth factors and forest management practices in order to determine the best locations for future redwood growth in the Bay Area. However, this research project is more than just its overall goals, it is also meant to be an introductory research experience for 14 students, some of which have not yet had the opportunity to take part in Berkeley research....

STAR Microbial Fuel Cell

Project Description

STAR's Microbial Fuel Cell project aims to reduce the carbon footprint and waste produced by our engineering team, and to set a precedent for improving sustainability in all areas - even those such as rocketry which seem, at a first glance, to be the antithesis of sustainability.

Planting Native Milkweed Habitat for Monarch Butterflies

Project Description

This proposal seeks to plant native California milkweed plants in demonstration plots on Clark Kerr campus as an educational project as part of the Global Environment Theme House (GETH).

Composting at Blake Garden

Project Description

Grant funding is requested to purchase materials for building compost bins at Blake Garden to mix compost on-site (reduction in transport emissions and increase in reuse of green waste) and prevent worker injuries.

The Pollinators of Campus Native Wildflower Gardens

Project Description

Our project aims to compare the presence and abundance of pollinator species at the native plant garden at mak-’amham (Cafe Ohlone) with other non-native gardens on the UC Berkeley campus. Two surveys will be conducted in March and April to capture species diversity, to promote sustainable gardening by showcasing how the native plant garden supports diverse pollinator populations, contributing to healthy ecosystems and food sovereignty. Basins of Relations

Project Description

This project focuses on capturing roof rain water for the Convent house within the Berkeley
Student Cooperative (BSC). Each winter, 236,000 gallons of roof rainwater exits the property
entering the Berkeley Marina. This two-day workshop will redirect rainwater into rain gardens
and tanks to support 1) groundwater recharge 2) water tank storage during drought and 3) install
a perennial food gardens to mitigate local climate extremes by providing:
