These projects emphasize the disproportionate impacts of environmental injustices on historically marginalized communities, the ways in which communities impacted by environmental injustices organize to protect their community's health and well-being, or otherwise education our campus community about environmental justice topics. 

Please note that not all Environmental Justice themed-projects may be funded as Environmental Justice projects. 

SERC NEWT Peaks of the Bay

Project Description

The Peaks of the Bay program’s goal is to introduce and connect the UC Berkeley community to the beautiful mountains of the Bay Area. Within an academic year, SERC NEWT would provide a free and accessible experience to four iconic mountains in the Bay Area, including one overnight trip. In Spring 2025, it will have been 10 years since the founding of the Students of Color Environmental Collective (SCEC), a campus student organization that has helped pave the way for environmental justice conversations on UC Berkeley’s campus. Cultivating Equity for a Just Future (CEJF): Empowering Latinx Students Through Sustainable Research

The Latinxs and the Environment Initiative (LEI) is launching the CEJF Project, a year-long program intended to promote sustainability and environmental justice research to BIPOC students on campus through educational workshops and presentations and provide a paid summer research opportunity for undergraduate Latinx/BIPOC students at UC Berkeley to receive hands-on experience with faculty and graduate student researchers conducting research about sustainability and environmental justice.
