BSFC Culinary Cultures Education Project

Project Description

This project aims to bridge the cultural disconnect in the BSFC's food prep service by hiring a Culinary Cultures Education Associate to do outreach work. The food prep system diverts food that would otherwise be wasted into cooked meals that are offered on a sliding scale of $1-5. Through this project, the BSFC hopes to help students understand the cultural history of their food and avoid perpetuating the white capitalist nature of our food system. Wine Barrel Composting

Project Description

The Anaerobic Digestion Project within ESW aims to build an anaerobic digester that will efficiently convert food waste into methane, the principle component of natural gas. Compared to other hydrocarbons, burning methane as fuel produces less carbon dioxide for each unit of heat released. Additionally, a byproduct of anaerobic digestion is digestate, a nutrient rich natural fertilizer.

Campus Bike Plan Update

Project Description

Grant funding is requested to 1. create (at minimum) 30 new high-quality still images and up to 10 new video-clips which will showcase the breadth and depth of campus sustainability in action, and 2. synthesize the selected images and footage into one, short finished multimedia piece. Funding will cover media equipment rental costs and the student interns' hours.

Greening the Berkeley Science Review, Phase II

Project Description

Grant funding is requested to cover the additional cost of printing the spring 2013 issue of the magazine on recycled paper and to hire a spring student intern to assist with web-development of publishing online content.

Greening the Berkeley Science Review

Project Description

This grant will cover the difference in costs for the BSR to print on 55% recycled-content paper, purchase carbon offsets to cover delivery costs of the BSR, and fund a workshop to share green printing practices with the other 40+ ASUC publications.

Crops of the World Innovative Interpretation

Project Description

We aim to make more evidence-driven, inclusive and deeply educational signage for UC Botanical Garden’s Crops of the World Garden. This will promote thinking about sustainability in food systems among visitors and student groups. We are pairing this with a database of botanical garden signage from around the world to link gardens and inspire further innovation in this field. Island Justice Fellows Program II

Project RISHI is a nonprofit organization committed to the sustainable development of rural Indian communities. Since 2013, the UC Berkeley chapter has worked in Bharog Baneri, Himachal Pradesh to address the key challenge of agricultural water stress. People of Color Sustainability Campaign

Project Description

The People of Color sustainability campaign aims to facilitate sustainable and environmental justice education for POCTH residents and Berkeley Student Cooperative students of color. Targeted outreach will be led by a paid resident from POCTH who will facilitate conversations, coordinate workshops and conduct outreach. Solar Thermal Heating Systems in the Berkeley Student Cooperative

Project Description

The BSC intends to install solar thermal heating systems in its African-American Theme House (AATH) and Oscar Wilde, its LGBTQIA & Queer Theme House. The BSC celebrated its 85th anniversary last October and remains a cornerstone of student housing at UC Berkeley. As such, this project is a long term investment in green energy and community well-being for generations of co-op students beyond the 59 that currently reside in AATH and Wilde.
