Project Description

A. Project Leaders
Miranda Monge and Sharon Harichandran, Environmental Specialists with the Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S)
B. Goals of Your Project
The Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) oversees environmental programs, including water quality, watershed protection, and the Strawberry Creek Restoration Program (SCRP). For over a decade, EH&S staff, SCRP student interns, and volunteers have collaborated to protect natural resources on campus.
Several creeks flow through the University, including Strawberry Creek, Codornices Creek, and Village Creek. Due to the urban location, the creeks are vulnerable to environmental impacts, such as pollution, erosion, and invasive species. EH&S focuses on stormwater pollution prevention and restoration of native habitat along creek banks, to help sustain a diverse community of fish and microinvertebrates. EH&S conducts outreach events for the campus community, providing education on the importance of these ecosystems and offering opportunities for public engagement
The Restoring Creeks of UC Berkeley Project builds on these efforts by providing critical resources to enhance stewardship activities and expand the scope of outreach events. This project will support the Strawberry Creek watershed on the Berkeley campus, and Codornices and Village Creeks at University Village in Albany.
With the support of TGIF, this Project's goal is to broaden the community awareness and appreciation of these creeks, and strengthen ecological resilience of the watersheds.
