Healing the Pavement on Campus

Project Description

Recycling concrete offers a sustainable path for pavement maintenance. Massive concrete wastes are generated in the civil and environmental engineering (CEE) structural laboratory every year because of undergraduate education and scientific research demand. The existing waste concrete disposal such as “landfill” is expensive ($400/ton) and unsustainable. Vermicomposting by Zero Waste Resource Center

Project Description

The vermicomposting bin has been actively processing organic food waste from the Clark Kerr Kitchen primarily, as well as the Crossroads Kitchen, since then. Currently, around ten gallons of food waste are being added to the bin per week, but it has the capacity to increase. This gives undergraduates at UC Berkeley opportunities to have real experience in the field and to gain a deeper knowledge of the importance of zero waste on campus and in the real world. FoodWare at Haas

Project Description

Catered events at UC Berkeley lead to unnecessary waste and carbon emissions from disposable packaging. Approximately 100-1000 single-use items are discarded at each event. After connecting with the sustainability team at the Haas School of Business and realizing the school shares the same sentiment, we are taking action and launching a pilot in cooperation with Haas with the hope of expanding to the rest of campus. Electric Cargo Bike for ReUse Stations

ReUSE and Cal Zero Waste are requesting funds to purchase an electric cargo bicycle to transport materials from the Cal Zero Waste office to each ReUSE station, rather than moving items on foot.

Deployment of Reusables on Campus

Project Description

Cal Zero Waste plans to launch a partnership with FoodWare, a TGIF funded project, to implement a new dishwasher on campus and increase the amount of reusable takeout ware on campus and restaurants. Through FoodWare, the UC Berkeley community will be able to purchase their meals in reusable materials, track CO2 emissions avoided, and the amount of single-use containers saved, which will improve the overall impact of the campus community.

BioCleanse Waste Cooking Oil Purification and Pretreatment System

Project Description

The Biofuels Technology Club (BTC) is part of the College of Chemistry, and has a mission to help UC Berkeley achieve a zero-waste campus. By producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil generated by the campus dining halls, the club has a goal of eventually powering campus fleet vehicles with low-carbon, renewable fuel.
