Vermicomposting Implementation Project

Project Basics

Project Sponsor: Zero Waste Coalition at the Student Environmental Resource Center

Amount Awarded: $17,800

Grant Awarded: Spring 2024

Project Status: In Progress

Project Description

The Vermicompost Implementation Project heightens the impact of our existing Continuous-Flow-Through Vermicomposting Bin by unifying our material flows and expanding our educational offerings. First, we will relocate our Bin to the Clark Kerr Campus (CKC) Garden, where we will continue processing CKC Kitchen food waste and producing nutrient-rich vermicast to benefit the CKC Garden. By tightening our project’s geographic scope we will become a clear educational example of organics resource circularity. Second, this new location will form the foundation of our on-site learning lab. Utilizing our new space, we will approach environmental education collaboratively, leading experiential-learning-based workshops, teaching about the science and social practices behind organic waste, and sharing practical skills that empower both public workshop attendees and enrolled DeCal students to reimagine their own relationships with waste. Our project will steward a new generation of composters and build a strong community of waste advocates through high-quality environmental education.
