EH&S Strawberry Creek Hydrologic Monitoring Initiative

Project Basics

Project Sponsor: Department of Environmental Health & Safety

Amount Awarded: $27,980

Grant Awarded: Spring 2024

Project Status: In Progress

Project Description

By building upon UCB’s watershed monitoring efforts, we aim to raise awareness of aquatic ecosystem health, enhance accessibility to creek sensor data, and expand UCB’s creek monitoring capabilities. Our focus is to create a surface water monitoring platform that provides access to current and historical surface water monitoring for Strawberry Creek. Our deliverables include an open source web app that enables users to download all available Strawberry Creek surface water monitoring data, graphical data summaries, and text message alerts based on fluctuations in sensor readings indicative of hazardous spills and hydrologic events. We will also prototype adding new capabilities to UCB’s existing sensors to help detect oil spills. Our direct community impact includes field teaching days during which we deploy a sensor system and discuss its applications for protecting aquatic environments. Lastly, we will collaborate with professors to create problem sets and discuss possible research ideas that can be used by teachers, students, and both institutional and citizen scientists.
